Q:
How much experience do I need before I can join Ivan Salaverry MMA?
-
A:
No experience is necessary. We teach beginner through professional. Honestly most
of our members sign up without having done any kind of martial art, and often out
of shape.
-
Q:
How old do you have to be?
-
A:
In general we are an adult gym, we try and keep ages 18 and up, but we do have a
little leeway. Ultimately 16 is about the youngest we are willing to have a member,
and that requires a parent or guardian to sign the waiver as well.
-
Q:
What about women?
-
A:
Some of our most constant and dedicated members are women. Certainly women are the
minority in the sport, but you can usually expect to see at least a few girls in
class on any given night.
-
Q:
What sort of gear will I need?
-
A:
That depends on the classes you want to take. In general you'll want a cup and mouth
guard. That will pretty much cover our grappling classes. For boxing you'll need
boxing gloves. Kickboxing will require shin pads. That's pretty much it. Members
do provide their own gear(community gear is just not sanitary), but we provided
different sets of pads, headgear, etc.
-
Q:
What about the shirts?
-
A:
Gym shirts are required to participate in the classes. The basic gym T is $20, and
has a place for your name. We also have various fight shirts that can be worn for
$25, and long sleeve rash guards for $45. Shirt availability depends on our inventory
levels, so depending on size we may not have a specific type of shirt in stock.
-
Q:
Can I pay in cash or with a check?
-
A:
Sort of. We can take all purchases with cards(Amex or MC only), cash or check, but
we do need a card on file for the month to month membership. You can still pay with
cash or check, but you must do so before your due date, or our computer will charge
your card. If you do not have funds available a $20 NSF charge will be added to
your total.
-
Q:
How often do I need to renew
-
A:
Never really. The prepays automatically transition into the month to month. The
month to month has a 3 month minimum commitment, but continues until you cancel
(30 days notice is required). We won't cancel for you, so if you will be away let
us know, otherwise charges will continue to accrue. We will do short term holds
as a courtesy depending on the situation, but we won't refund months that you chose
not to attend.
-
Q:
Who teaches the classes?
-
A:
For the most part Ivan teaches every class himself with and assistant instructor,
typically one of his trainers of a student advanced in that discipline. In the rare
event that Ivan cannot come in for class, the assistant will teach in his place.
-
Q:
How often can/should I come to class?
-
A:
With the exception of punch card members, everyone may come to any class they want,
any time they want. We recommend that beginners start off slow, 1 class in a night
for a while. It's typical for someone in decent shape to attend 2 classes in a night
2-4 nights a week.
-
Q:
Will there be sparring?
-
A:
There will be some sparring. We usually try and end every class with some kind of
live drill. This can be rounds of live wrestling in the wrestling class, some light
to moderate sparring in boxing and kickboxing a few days a week, up to(voluntary)
full contact sparring and hard wrestling between advanced students during open mat
times.
-
Q:
What is open mat?
-
A:
Open mat is the time when the gym is open for use, but there are no classes happening.
This is the time when people will come in and work on their own, with partners,
coaches, etc. on what they want to work on. It's voluntary, but very helpful and
typically well attended. We do this after the 8:30 class on each night, all evening
Friday, and on Saturday from 12-3.
-
Q:
What if I am interested in getting some fights?
-
A:
We'll help. While most of our members do not compete, competitive fighting is the
core of our classes. If you are one of the few who want to fight we can advise you,
put you on our team for wresting, submission wrestlings, boxing, or kickboxing fights,
and transition you to mma if you wish. We train up to and including active UFC fighters.
-
Q:
How do I sign up?
-
A:
We have everything you need here at the gym. The paperwork takes a few minutes,
and we can outfit you in any gear you may lack. If you want to train the day you
sign up come about 15 minutes before the class you want to attend, otherwise come
in any time during our normal business hours. We are always glad to add someone
to the team.
